Renting a Car in Cappadocia: Our 3-Day Road Trip, Real Costs & Driving Tips

Is renting a car in Cappadocia worth it?

For our family, absolutely.

We spent three nights in Cappadocia traveling as four adults and one child, rented a car through Discover Cars, picked it up at Kayseri Erkilet Airport (ASR) and returned it at Nevşehir Kapadokya Airport (NAV).

Having our own car allowed us to visit practically every major attraction we wanted to see in Cappadocia in three days, from Göreme and Uçhisar to Paşabağ, Zelve, Avanos, underground cities, Ihlara Valley and Selime.

After comparing several platforms, I booked through DiscoverCars — it offered the best prices and clear conditions for cross-border travel between the three countries. The booking process was quick, transparent, and entirely online, which saved me time at the counter.

We also woke up in the middle of the night for a hot-air balloon flight, stayed at Sultan Cave Suites in Göreme and even used our rental car to search for the ruins of an old church dedicated to Saint George.

In this guide, I’ll share exactly how much our Cappadocia car rental cost, what car we booked and received, what driving in Cappadocia was like, how our one-way rental from Kayseri to Nevşehir worked, and the 3-day Cappadocia road trip we actually did.

Is it worth renting a car in Cappadocia?

For our group, yes, renting a car in Cappadocia was worth it.

We were four adults and one child, which meant four adults could share the cost of the rental car, insurance and fuel.

But cost was only part of the decision.

Cappadocia is not a single town. Its attractions are spread across a region that includes Göreme, Uçhisar, Ürgüp, Avanos, Çavuşin, underground cities, valleys and archaeological sites.

You certainly do not need a rental car to visit Cappadocia. Travelers staying primarily around central Göreme can combine walking, taxis, local transport and organized tours.

A car becomes considerably more useful when you want to explore independently and include more distant attractions such as the underground cities and Ihlara Valley.

That was exactly the type of trip we wanted.

We were also traveling with our daughter and my parents, so having our own schedule was particularly convenient.

If somebody needed a break, we stopped. If we wanted to spend longer somewhere, we stayed. And when I wanted to find an obscure ruined church connected to Saint George, we simply changed our route and went looking for it.

With DiscoverCars, I could filter only companies allowing multi-country trips, avoiding surprises later.

How we rented a car in Cappadocia – Renting a Car in Cappadocia

We booked our Cappadocia rental car through Discover Cars.

The actual local rental company providing the vehicle was Nissa Car Rental.

We reserved:

Intermediate SUV – Dacia Duster or similar (IFAR)

When you see “Dacia Duster or similar” on a rental-car booking, remember that you are generally booking a vehicle category rather than that exact make and model.

In our case, the car we actually received was a Volkswagen Taigo.

Space mattered because there were five of us traveling together, including our daughter, plus our luggage.

How much did our Cappadocia car rental cost?

Our rental booked through Discover Cars cost €271.93, which we had already paid online before arriving.

Our voucher also showed approximately €21 to be paid at pick-up. However, we did not make a separate €21 payment at the rental desk.

At pick-up, the Nissa Car Rental representative offered us additional full insurance for US$100 in cash, which we chose to purchase.

That US$100 was the only additional payment we made on site.

I cannot say whether the approximately €21 shown on the voucher was not charged or whether it was considered within the US$100 arrangement. What I can say with certainty is what actually left our pocket:

€271.93 paid through Discover Cars + US$100 paid in cash at pick-up for the additional full insurance, plus fuel during the trip.

Splitting the rental-car cost between four adults

This is particularly relevant when comparing a rental car with tours, transfers and taxis.

Although there were five passengers, we were four adults sharing the expenses.

The €271.93 base rental works out to approximately €67.98 per adult for the entire rental period, before the optional insurance and fuel.

And we used the car extensively.

It was not simply an airport transfer that spent the rest of the trip parked outside our hotel.

For a solo traveler or couple, the financial calculation may be very different. For four adults traveling together, as we were, splitting the cost made renting a car considerably more attractive.

Kayseri or Nevşehir Airport: which is better for Cappadocia? Renting a Car in Cappadocia

Cappadocia has no airport in Göreme itself.

The two main airports used by visitors are:

Kayseri Erkilet Airport (ASR)
Nevşehir Kapadokya Airport (NAV)

Nevşehir Airport is geographically closer to Göreme and several of Cappadocia’s central tourist towns. Kayseri, however, often provides more flight options.

If flight schedules and prices had been equally convenient for our trip, I would have chosen Nevşehir because of its location.

But they weren’t.

And that is why I think travelers should compare the whole journey, rather than simply choosing the closest airport.

Why did we fly from Antalya to Kayseri?

Cappadocia was part of a much larger trip.

Before arriving, we had been traveling through Turkey and the surrounding region with our daughter and my parents.

Our itinerary was essentially:

Istanbul → Georgia ( with Armenia day trip) → Antalya → Cappadocia → Istanbul

We initially spent one night in Istanbul and then flew directly to Georgia.

We stayed three nights in Georgia and made a day trip to Armenia. From Georgia, we flew to Antalya, where we spent another three nights.

We wanted to include a beach destination in our Turkey itinerary and had also considered Bodrum, which is one of the country’s famous coastal destinations.

Because we were traveling with a child, however, I preferred to organize the longer parts of our trip around convenient flights whenever possible rather than add unnecessary hours on the road.

From Antalya, the flight combination and fare that worked best for our dates took us to Kayseri Airport.

After three nights in Cappadocia, we would fly onward to Istanbul.

Had we found an equally convenient and inexpensive direct flight into Nevşehir, I would have preferred NAV because it is closer to Göreme.

Can you pick up a rental car in Kayseri and return it in Nevşehir? Renting a Car in Cappadocia

Yes. We did exactly that.

We picked up our rental car at Kayseri Airport (ASR) and returned it at Nevşehir Airport (NAV).

This is known as a one-way car rental.

It was extremely convenient for our itinerary because there was no reason to drive all the way back to Kayseri simply to return the vehicle before flying to Istanbul.

When booking, make sure you select your actual pick-up and drop-off locations and check the conditions shown on your voucher.

What was car pick-up like at Kayseri Airport?

Our Nissa Car Rental booking used a Meet & Greet service at Kayseri Airport.

The instructions indicated that a representative would meet us on arrival.

When we landed, however, nobody was there waiting for us.

We checked our voucher and called the telephone number provided.

About five minutes later, the representative arrived.

Ultimately, it was a minor inconvenience and did not cause a significant delay.

But it gave me one practical tip I would definitely pass on to other travelers:

Save your rental voucher and the local supplier’s telephone number somewhere easily accessible before you land.

Do not rely on finding those details only after arriving at the airport.

How did we return our rental car at Nevşehir Airport?

Returning the car in Nevşehir worked differently.

Remember that we were traveling as four adults, one child and all our luggage.

My husband first drove directly to Nevşehir Kapadokya Airport and dropped off me, my parents, our daughter and all the luggage at the terminal.

He then drove alone to the Nissa Car Rental office, which was nearby, and returned the Volkswagen Taigo.

After the return procedure was completed, a member of the rental staff drove him back to the airport.

For a family or larger group traveling with several suitcases, this worked extremely well.

Where we stayed in Cappadocia

We stayed at Sultan Cave Suites in Göreme.

Göreme was an excellent base for our road trip because of its central location and access to the major sightseeing routes.

Sultan Cave Suites is also famous for one of those quintessential Cappadocia scenes: its terrace overlooking the landscape as hot-air balloons fill the sky in the early morning.

Staying centrally in Göreme while having our own car gave us the best of both worlds.

Our 3-day Cappadocia road trip itinerary

We spent three nights in Cappadocia and packed a lot into those days.

You do not need to travel at exactly our pace. In fact, one of the advantages of having a car is being able to slow down whenever you want.

But this is what we were able to experience with our own vehicle.

Day 1: Göreme, Uçhisar and Cappadocia’s famous valleys

We began with some of Cappadocia’s essential historical and natural sights.

Göreme Open-Air Museum

Göreme Open-Air Museum is one of the places I would not skip on a first visit to Cappadocia.

This is far more than a collection of beautiful caves.

The area contains rock-cut churches, chapels, monastic spaces and other structures associated with centuries of Christian religious life in Cappadocia.

The site contains churches including St. Basil’s Church, Apple Church, St. Barbara Church, Serpent Church, Dark Church and others.

For us, Göreme Open-Air Museum also became the beginning of a very particular mission: looking for Saint George in Cappadocia.

Uçhisar and Pigeon Valley

We continued to Uçhisar, dominated by the enormous rock formation known as Uçhisar Castle.

We also explored Pigeon Valley, named after the numerous dovecotes carved into the rocks.

Love Valley, Rose Valley and Red Valley

Having a car also allowed us to move easily between Cappadocia’s famous valleys.

We visited Love Valley, instantly recognizable for its unusual tall rock formations, as well as Rose Valley and Red Valley.

This was when one of the advantages of driving became particularly obvious.

If we found an interesting viewpoint, we could stop.

If we liked somewhere, we could stay.

We weren’t watching the clock because a tour bus was waiting for us.

Day 2: waking before dawn for a Cappadocia hot-air balloon flight – Renting a Car in Cappadocia

Our second day started in the middle of the night.

We were getting ready for one of the experiences we had most looked forward to: a hot-air balloon flight over Cappadocia.

Balloon operations take place around sunrise and depend on weather and aviation clearance.

Getting up at that hour is tiring.

For us, it was completely worth it.

Watching Cappadocia’s extraordinary landscape from above while balloons filled the sky became one of the defining experiences of our trip.

After the flight and breakfast, however, the sightseeing day was far from over.

We got back in our car and continued exploring.

Paşabağ – Monks Valley

We visited Paşabağ, also known as Monks Valley.

It is one of the best places to see Cappadocia’s famous fairy chimneys at close range.

Zelve Open-Air Museum

We continued to Zelve Open-Air Museum, another remarkable rock-cut settlement.

What makes Cappadocia so fascinating is precisely this overlap between geology and human history.

People didn’t simply admire these formations.

For centuries, communities carved homes, churches and functional spaces into them.

Avanos

Next came Avanos, particularly famous for its pottery tradition.

Located along the Kızılırmak River, Avanos provides a different atmosphere from the valleys and rock formations that dominate much of a Cappadocia itinerary.

Devrent – Imagination Valley

We also stopped at Devrent Valley, commonly called Imagination Valley.

The fun here is looking at the natural rock formations and deciding what animals or shapes you can see in them.

Çavuşin

We also visited Çavuşin, another historic settlement associated with Cappadocia’s rock-cut architecture.

Linking all these stops independently was one of the reasons we were so happy to have rented a car.

Where can you find Saint George in Cappadocia?

This became one of the most personal parts of our trip.

Saint George is enormously popular in Brazil, and his traditional association with Cappadocia made us particularly curious to look for traces of him while we were actually there.

Historical certainty about Saint George’s biography is limited, and later Christian traditions added many elements to his story.

But Cappadocia contains remarkable artistic and religious references to him.

Saint George at Göreme Open-Air Museum

At Göreme Open-Air Museum, we found depictions of Saint George in the rock-cut churches.

One particularly important example is in St. Basil’s Chapel, where Saint George is depicted on horseback fighting the dragon.

For Brazilian visitors familiar with the traditional image of São Jorge, seeing that scene in Cappadocia was especially meaningful.

But we wanted to find something else.

We wanted to locate an actual church associated with his name.

So we got in the car and went looking for it.

Finding the ruins of Ayios Yeorgios Church in Ürgüp

Eventually we reached the ruins known today as Hıdırellez Kilisesi in Ürgüp.

And there we found what we had been looking for.

Historical research identifies this site as the former Ayios Yeorgios Church – Saint George Church.

The surviving structure is heavily ruined, but research into the church records a depiction of Saint George killing the dragon, one of the details supporting its dedication to the saint.

For us, finding the ruins was special precisely because it was not simply another stop on a standard sightseeing circuit.

We had an interest, we had our own car, and we went looking for it.

That kind of freedom became one of my favorite things about exploring Cappadocia independently.

Day 3: underground cities, Ihlara Valley and Selime – Renting a Car in Cappadocia

On our third day we drove farther from central Göreme.

This is the type of day when having a rental car becomes particularly useful.

Derinkuyu Underground City

We visited Derinkuyu Underground City, one of Cappadocia’s extraordinary subterranean complexes.

Walking down through its narrow passages and rooms makes it much easier to understand the scale of Cappadocia’s underground settlements than photographs ever could.

Kaymaklı Underground City

We also visited Kaymaklı Underground City.

Many Cappadocia itineraries suggest choosing either Derinkuyu or Kaymaklı if time is limited.

We visited both.

I would not say that every first-time visitor must do the same. If you prefer a slower itinerary, choosing one underground city may be enough.

We wanted to see both and, because we had our own transportation, we could.

Ihlara Valley

We continued to Ihlara Valley, farther from the central Göreme sightseeing area.

The landscape here feels quite different from many of the places we had explored during our first two days.

And this is where the usefulness of a rental car becomes even clearer.

A traveler staying exclusively around Göreme may not need a car at all. Once you begin adding underground cities, Ihlara and other more distant attractions, independent transportation becomes much more valuable.

Selime

We also visited Selime, with its remarkable rock-cut complex.

By the end of our three days, we had covered a considerable portion of Cappadocia.

Is driving in Cappadocia difficult? – Renting a Car in Cappadocia

We found driving in Cappadocia relatively easy.

The roads we used between the main attractions did not cause us significant problems.

The centers of places such as Göreme can be different. Streets can be narrow, and parking conditions depend on where you are staying or visiting.

There is another rule I would follow when driving in Cappadocia:

Do not assume every route shown by a navigation app is suitable for a normal rental car.

This is a landscape of valleys, hiking trails, unpaved tracks and archaeological areas.

Stick to appropriate roads and park when it makes more sense to continue on foot.

Do you need an SUV to drive and Renting a Car in Cappadocia?

For the regular sightseeing routes we drove, we did not need a 4×4.

We had reserved an Intermediate SUV category and received a Volkswagen Taigo, but the important point is not to treat valley tracks as normal roads simply because you have a larger vehicle.

For standard paved routes connecting the main towns and attractions, travelers generally do not need an off-road vehicle.

Is renting a car in Cappadocia worth it with children?

For our family, traveling with a child was another reason the car worked so well.

Our daughter was traveling with us, as were my parents.

That meant three generations traveling together.

If someone needed a break, we could stop.

And If our daughter was tired, we could adjust our plans.

If my parents needed more time somewhere, there was no group waiting.

And if I suddenly decided that I wanted to find an old Saint George church in Ürgüp, we could change the route.

For us, that flexibility had real value.

7 practical tips for renting a car in Cappadocia

1. Compare flights to both Kayseri (ASR) and Nevşehir (NAV). Nevşehir is closer to central Cappadocia, but Kayseri may offer a better flight or fare for your particular dates.
2. Consider a one-way rental. We picked up our car in Kayseri and returned it in Nevşehir, avoiding an unnecessary drive back to our arrival airport.
3. Read the rental voucher before you fly. Check the actual supplier, pick-up procedure, drop-off location and any amount listed as payable locally.
4. Save the local rental company’s phone number. Our Meet & Greet representative was not there when we arrived, but appeared about five minutes after we called.
5. Understand the insurance you are buying. We chose to pay US$100 in cash for additional full insurance offered by Nissa Car Rental at pick-up.
6. Photograph or film the vehicle at pick-up and return. Record the exterior, wheels, interior, fuel level and mileage.
7. Calculate the cost per group, not just per car. Four adults were sharing our expenses, which made the economics very different from those of a solo traveler.

Do you actually need a Renting a Car in Cappadocia?

No. You can absolutely visit Cappadocia without renting a car.

If you stay centrally in Göreme, focus on nearby attractions and use organized tours for the more distant sights, a rental car may be unnecessary.

But that was not our itinerary.

We were four adults and one child. We wanted to see a lot in three days, travel at our own pace, visit distant attractions and have the freedom to change our plans.

And We paid €271.93 for our Discover Cars booking and chose to add US$100 for additional full insurance at pick-up.

We picked up the car at Kayseri Airport, returned it at Nevşehir Airport and used it throughout our three-night stay.

During those three days, we visited Göreme Open-Air Museum, Uçhisar, Pigeon Valley, Love Valley, Rose Valley, Red Valley, Paşabağ, Zelve, Avanos, Devrent, Çavuşin, Derinkuyu, Kaymaklı, Ihlara Valley and Selime.

We flew over Cappadocia in a hot-air balloon at sunrise.

And we even left the conventional tourist trail to find the ruins of an old church associated with Saint George.

For our family and our style of travel, renting a car in Cappadocia was absolutely worth it.

I would make the same decision again.
